Clareo Team

Meet Clareo’s team of Founders.

Collectively, our team has decades of experience in genomic assay development, immunogenetics, information technology, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence.

Melissa Smith

Chief Executive Officer

Melissa Smith obtained her foundational training in virology and immunology at Harvard University and Institut Pasteur, Paris, and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. While at UofL, Melissa has also spearheaded the Sequencing Technology Center, the only PacBio Certified Service Provider in Kentucky. Prior to moving to Louisville, she occupied roles as a strategic marketing manager at Pacific Biosciences and Associate Director of Technology Development at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. Her ongoing scientific efforts focus on developing innovative genomics strategies to resolve complex genomics structures, including immunogenomic loci and repertoires.

Corey Watson

Chief Scientific Officer

Corey Watson is a global leader in immunogenomics, with 18 years of experience in the development of novel approaches for profiling diversity in the adaptive immune system. His research has demonstrated extensive genetic diversity in immune receptor genes of human populations and key animal model species, shedding light on our understanding of immune system function and disease. He is also a key opinion leader in data standards and policy development for adaptive immune receptor genes, with active roles in multiple international societies. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

William Lees

Chief Technology Officer

William Lees develops tools and techniques for adaptive immune receptor gene discovery and repertoire analysis, and publishes widely-used receptor gene databases. He is co-chair of the Germline Database Working Group of the Adaptive Immune Receptor Repertoire Community. Before gaining a PhD in Biosciences in 2013, he was a co-founder and COO of Virtual Clarity, a successful technology startup, and Executive Director of IT at UBS Investment Bank.

Our Story

Antibodies (immunoglobulins (IGs)) and T Cell receptors (TCRs) are critical players in nearly every immune system process. The genes that encode these adaptive immune receptors reside within the most complex regions of vertebrate genomes. While the study of genetic variation within IG and TCR genes began back in the 1980’s, our understanding of their role in fundamental immunological processes remains incomplete. Even in the modern genomics era, few direct links between these genes and disease have been made. But this isn’t because the links aren’t there, they’ve just been overlooked. Until now, we’ve lacked the tools to accurately characterize the full spectrum of (i) genetic diversity at the genomic level and (ii) the most critical sequence features in expressed antibodies and TCRs that underlie their most important functions in immunity.

Every member of our team has committed their scientific careers to developing cutting-edge molecular methods, analytical tools for data curation and modeling, and holistic approaches to building first-in-class genomic resources and databases for these highly complex and diverse genes. Our commitment stems from the belief that immunogenetic data holds the secrets to decoding many of today’s mysteries in immune-mediated disease. We endeavor to push our emerging technologies to the forefront of the field and empower labs to leverage immunogenomics to inform the development of novel vaccines, therapeutics, and companion diagnostics that can reach and represent the greatest breadth of global populations.
